Out-Of-State Plates

Never mind that the band formed in 1996. Never mind that they had released two powerpoptastic bits of wonderment in their 1996 self-titled debut and in 1999's Utopia Parkway. Evidently, by the time Fountains Of Wayne dropped Welcome Interstate Managers in 2003, with its ubiquitous jam, “Stacy’s Mom” (so ubiquitous, in fact that when the video’s star, Rod Stewart’s ex-wife, Rachel Hunter, posed for Playboy, they billed her on the cover as “Stacy’s Mom”), they were still under the radar enough to be viewed as a new band, at least in the eyes of Grammy voters. However, they really did issue those two previous albums and now with the release of Out-Of-State Plates, die-hard Fountains fans and newbies alike can rejoice in this collection of B-sides and rarities. One of the two new tracks included in the compilation, “Maureen”, is the standout of the bunch, incorporating the punchy guitar attack expected from FoW, as well as the sweet harmonies the Jersey boys always manage to produce so effortlessly. There are many unearthed gems in this two-cd set, including their take on songs by Aztec Camera, Jackson Browne, and even “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. On top of all that, the liner notes are written by the band themselves, lending some insight as to song choices and background stories. If these aren’t reasons enough to pick up this record, you just don’t really like music, do you?
