Soft EP

Certain towns have certain sounds. One can argue there is a “New York” sound, a “Southern California” sound and a “Manchester” sound. It’s just that sometimes, wires get crossed, like with Soft. Based in The Big Apple, but with hearts firmly placed in Manchester, this up-and-coming quintet pens wondrously chiming guitar tunes with legs, the hooks again and again popping up in your head as you go about your daily routine. Frontman Johnny Reineck has a distinctly Liam Gallagher-esque quality to his voice, if not a decidedly more fey Liam, especially on EP opener “Higher”. No matter, a good voice is a good voice, regardless of the octave. “All That You’re Shown” showcases drummer Chris Colley’s skills, the syncopated beats driving the track ever further. Imagine if you will, a more atmospheric Oasis or Verve minus the LSD. Wahwahs are stepped on, tambourines shake, drums shuffle, and guitars buzz and bounce off the walls, evoking much of what is loved about Manchester’s music scene. And over the top of it all, Reineck’s tones hover, intertwining with soaring melody lines while still being anchored by that shuffly rhythm section. Soft may not be from Manchester, but with songs like this, they are plenty good enough for me.
