In preparation of their forthcoming fall North American tour, Nine Inch Nails are launching a special ticketing program aimed at snuffing out ticket scalpers and their increasingly inflated prices. This two-tiered effort will ensure that true NIN fans receive the best price and maximum opportunity to score premium seating for the trek. Sounds complicated, right? Well, it sort of is, but it's also pretty damn smart. As the program is "two-tiered", lets tackle one tier at a time, shall we?
The first "tier" uses a specially-established NIN fan club that will offer its members premium tickets for the tour. To reduce scalper access, no other advance ticket programs through venues, radio, sponsors, etc., have been offered. Members of this special NIN fan club will pick up their tickets at will-call 30 minutes in advance of each show. No tickets will be distributed to buyers prior to the show, ensuring that those who purchase them, are the ones who are actually using them.
OK, so "tier" two goes a little something like this... A series of online auctions for premium seats will be conducted through Ticketmaster beginning Monday, August 8. At noon local time, fans can log onto Ticketmaster.com and bid on great tickets for 19 venues in the US and Canada (additional auctions will go live on August 22). This way, while the fans may be paying a higher price for the good seats, at least the money is going into the band's hands instead of some ticket scalper, right?
Well actually, if you're thinking, "does Trent really need to increase his profits by auctioning off great seats and reaping all of the profits?," the answer is NO, he doesn't. In fact, Trent won't see any of that dough because he's donating it all to charity. The proceeds from the online auctions will go directly to the non-profit organization The Innocence Project, which provides post-conviction DNA testing to cases where such testing can yield conclusive proof on innocence.
So while keeping ticket scalpers' greedy little hands out of his "cookie jar" might be a slight pain in the ass for NIN and their fans, their hearts are in the right place and, if all goes well, this model could become the new standard.
The NIN North American tour will kick off on September 16 at the Cox Arena in San Diego. Queens Of The Stone Age will support all dates. Autolux will support the first half of dates, while Death From Above 1979 will support the second.
