Terrorhawk

My earliest introduction to Equal Vision brings me back to high school, where as a junior I remember banging on suburban basement walls, screaming the lyrics of Saves the Day’s greatest album, Through Being Cool. My relationship as a listener continued to progress as the emergence of popular bands such as Vaux and Alexisonfire easily sustained my angst-ridden imagination. So, undoubtedly I jumped at an opportunity to review something current from a label that has yet to let me down. What I found was something slightly off the beaten path and perhaps slightly more developed than I had expected. Bear Vs Shark (BVS), a Michigan based five-piece, has come out of the studio to produce their second album, cleverly titled Terrorhawk. It isn’t exactly what I might expect to hear, but the level of maturity and over all ingenuity sets BVS apart not only from other bands on their label, but from just about every other band in the world. The five members set off to a secluded shanty on an island off the coast of Michigan to write this most recent release. In deep seclusion, they attempted to find a way to appropriately mesh their various influences by putting an unbelievable emphasis on originality. The end result has been described as Fugazi meets Motown, which I know sounds a little off the wall. But with the aid of veteran producer Mathew Ellard (Motorhead, Morphine, Converge), BVS has managed to pull it off and the release of Terrorhawk comes as a true breakthrough for the label. Just when you think you may be able to pin-down a genre cliché that might accurately describe the talents of BVS, on a whim the band makes an unexpected change in sound. These digressions into various styles don’t play out like a collision course, instead the sometimes abrupt changes are woven together tightly, like that pair of mittens your mother crocheted for you in the third grade. BVS credits everyone from Black Sabbath to the Commodores for providing inspiration on this album and the end result is nothing far from fantastic.
