MOJO Aid is an artist-sponsored Hurricane Katrina benefit concert happening this Sunday (September 18) at NYC's Irving Plaza. Organized by NYC-based singer/songwriter Jesse Malin, the event will feature performances from Ryan Adams And The Cardinals, Joseph Arthur, Debbie Harry, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Butch Walker and Marah. Malin will also perform with a full band, and a number of surprise guests are expected to show up as well. In addition, original artwork, autographed guitars, and other music memorabilia will be auctioned off throughout the night during a silent auction. All of the proceeds from both the ticket sales and the auction will be donated to the American Red Cross.
"After many days of sadness and frustration, I felt I needed to do something to help," Jesse Malin said of his decision to spearhead the event. "Being a musician, I figured that if I put together a great show we could raise a lot of money. So I called some friends and fellow musicians and asked for their support. Everybody seemed very down with this. There is a real feeling of everyone wanting to come out and contribute to this cause. The people of New Orleans made that city the soul of the south for me; as a touring musician, it was always an oasis. I plan to tear it up New York style with my band and friends, with great music and a lot of love."
Personally, Jesse Malin is one of my favorite modern singer/songwriters and the fact that he took it upon himself to organize this event, which is not only for a great cause, but boasts an incredible line-up of fellow musicians, is a testament to the fact that Malin is one of the few who are in this business for all the right reasons. Kudos to you Jesse Malin... wherever you are.
