Legendary Smiths Photo Acquired By National Portrait Gallery

Every once in a while a photographer has the opportunity to take an iconic photograph of a band destined to become legendary. Stephen Wright was fortunate enough to be given such an opportunity when he photographed The Smiths in 1986. One of these photos, taken in front of Salford Lads’ Club, was used on the inner sleeve of the band’s album The Queen Is Dead. This famous photograph has now been acquired by England’s National Portrait Gallery to join their permanent collection. No date has officially announced as of yet for the portrait’s first public display. I now see a pilgrimage to England in my near future.
