Extraordinary Machine

OK so we didn't wait as long for Fiona Apple's new CD, Extraordinary Machine as we waited for Brian Wilson's Smile, but it sure as hell felt like it, right? We all know the drama that was wrapped up in this, so there is no need to re-hash it. However for drama sake, the new LP was produced by Mike Elizondo (various Dr. Dre related albums) along with Jon Brion. Despite people saying the "suits" wanted to shelf it because of a lack of hits, it was actually pushed back for so long because Fiona herself was not finished with the record until now. So what is the new LP like? Well, after all these years Fiona is still the same, with music evoking raw emotions of bitter aggressiveness and throaty street-smart vocals. Her lyrics are complex as ever, and a good chunk of the album was made after a split with ex-boyfriend Paul Anderson. As a result Fiona has some great writing material and it shows. The cabaret-style songs remain fresh and can easily fit in 5, 10 or 15 years from now as they do today. "Get Him Back", "Please Please Please" are classic piano thrashing Fiona tunes, whereas "Window" and "Tymps (The Stick In The Head Song)" both showcase electronic looped beats and signature piercing lyrics. One of the best songs on the record is "O'Sailor", a slow building, melodic journey that draws from experimental music and from her past as well. Granted the album has been "available" for sometime to all the naughty file sharers out there, but there is reason to check out the new full in its entirety; the way Fiona would want you to hear it.
