American Analog Set. Maybe I take a little more pride in them since they are from Texas and so am I. I mean, yeah they are good, and they make perfect music for this time of year. A little slower, and definitely something to cuddle up in a blanket with and drink hot cider to. Now on their newest adventure, American Analog Set return to the plate with a new label to call home (Canada's Arts & Crafts) and twelve tracks of fuzzed out guitars and lush soundscapes. Set Free was recorded in three cities over the span of a little more than a year, and it also finds the band expanding on the soothing and soft to the ears droning pop sound that was heard on their previous effort, The Golden Band. One of the best things about American Analog Set is the work that goes into mastering and engineering their albums. Each one is intricately put together the way a masterpiece work of art is created. An example of this work is seen in the most upbeat song on the album, "Cool Kids Keep". This track sounds like a cross between an old mellow song by Dandy Warhols mixed with Stereolab, with the lyrics "The Cooler Kids Will Live Forever" repeating over and over again. I don't think American Analog Set is trying to complain that they wish they were the cool kids in this case, they know they are and their confidence shines. Other highlight tracks to check out include "Make It Easy", the two part "Immaculate Heart" tunes, and the best song title ever, "Fuck This...I'm Leaving". Granted the sound may not way too far from the past, but existing fans (and new ones alike) will both be pleased. Besides, like my Texan parents always said, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
