The King Of France’s first tour continues on. In this installment of journalist/drummer Michael Azerrad’s tour diary, we catch up with him as the band wraps up a performance at Connecticut College.
Since our bassist Don Piper won’t be able to join the tour yet we played Connecticut College in New London last night as a trio – Steve (guitar, vocals), Dawn (keyboards) and I. That was actually our instrumentation for a long time, so I could set up in my usual spot -- up front, stage right -- and see the audience instead of looking squarely at Steve’s back. Made the show a lot more fun for me, and I think people like to watch the drummer. We’ll out how to make it work.
It was an unprepossessing venue – a white box in a student center, with a minimal P.A., but it was also our best-paying and possibly best-attended gig of the tour and they even gave us an unlimited tab at the cafeteria.
To be honest, the audience was a bunch of super-normal college students out for some wholesome (no beer allowed in the student center) fun on a Friday night and most of them seemed a little baffled by us. But a bunch of kids – obviously big-time music geeks -- came up to us afterwards and raved, and we sold plenty of CDs again. I guess we have a particular and very enthusiastic audience, which suits me fine.
During the Robbers’ set some college kid hollered out, “Play ‘Freebird!’” You have to admit it’s kind of amazing how that one lame joke has lasted through three generations now -- I bet that kid’s grandfather yelled “’Freeeebird’!” when Black Oak Arkansas played the Tuscaloosa Civic Center in 1976. There’s no way that kid even knows the basis of the joke. Ben from the Robbers had a nice comeback: “OK, who wrote ‘Freebird,’ dude?” Exactly.
Lame heckling aside, the kids loved the Robbers. Lots of dancing and carrying on during their set. They had a really good night. Ball’s in our court.
