Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, has teamed up with David Byrne to write a musical. The subject of this bit of song and dance is former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, who loved nightlife in all parts of the world. In fact, she loved it so much she had a disco installed in her NYC townhouse during the days of Studio 54. Now that is some disco devotion!
The musical, titled Here Lies Love, will premiere at Australia’s Adelaide Festival in March ’06, where it is being billed as “a timeless story with more contemporary resonances than are comfortable.” Marianne Weems will direct the 90-minute performance, which is being described as a “multimedia extravaganza”.
A spokesperson for the Adelaide Festival told the BBC that Marcos’ life “was a non-stop party, featuring politicians, arms dealers, financiers, artists, musicians and the international jet set." Disco, weapons and money… how can you go wrong with that?
