I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

"Don't believe the hype," is a phrase Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Taylor is fond of saying at the beginning of his band's gigs. But it's hard to ignore when the hype is piling up in 10-foot stacks. The four-piece's first single for Domino Records is entitled "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and it debuted at #1 on the UK charts. Quite an achievement for such a band of neophytes and it touched off an A&R bidding frenzy. For now, however, the quartet from Sheffield are sticking with Domino. So, what is about "Dancefloor" that makes it so special? It's a short-but-sweet, spiky guitar-laden gem, evoking newer bands like Kaiser Chiefs or Dead 60s blended with classic London act The Jam. The dual-six-string attack is punctuated by the sheer speed and fury of the strumming, the entire song rumbling headlong at dizzying speed. It's the type of tune that will be sung along to after a night of boozing on either side of the Atlantic, and one sure to be a crowd favorite in the live arena. Do the 'Monkeys have more #1 tunes up their sleeves? Who knows? They're just 19 and 20 years old. However, they do have a #1 in "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor". Most bands wait a lifetime for a #1 and it never happens; Arctic Monkeys got it right on their first proper try, so just enjoy this pure pop moment while it lasts.
