After far too many news stories have speculated about the long overdue new album from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O has finally let the cat out of the bag... literally. According to an interview with MTV.com, their follow-up to Fever To Tell is a concept album about O’s cat. Yeah, I think somebody has been smoking way too many of those funny smelling cigarettes.
The new album, tentatively due out in March, will be titled Coco Beware – Coco being the name of her cat. Producer Sam “Squeak E. Clean” Spiegel, has been working on Coco as well as Karen O’s solo debut. Clean, who is the younger brother of Spike Jonze, said that the kitty concept album began during a spiritual journey to South America taken by O and “Maps” video director Patrick Daughters.
Clean said: “The whole album is pretty much about this cat's journey from Chile to New York. Each track tells the story of the [cat's life]. So it starts with Coco's birth, to when they found Coco, and continues." He also noted that the few songs that the group recorded that don’t fit with the feline theme might end up on an EP.
So what does a kitty cat concept album sound like? Clean explained: “There's still some old Yeah Yeah Yeahs [flavor] in there — it definitely rocks really hard — but there's more songs. [It has] real, beautiful songs, and Karen sings beautifully."
