Another Smiths reunion rumor has been squashed, which comes as no surprise whatsoever. Fans have been foaming at the mouth over this possibility, which popped up again when Johnny Marr and his band The Healers were scheduled to perform at the Manchester V. Cancer benefit on January 28. The event was organized by former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke, hence the rumors of a possible reunion.
Marr set the record straight on his official website, on which he said: “THE SMITHS WILL NOT BE RE-FORMING AT THIS CONCERT.” Yes, it was even posted in all caps. He did mention that Rourke may join the Healers for a song, but that would be the extent of it. The concert is being held at the Manchester Evening News Arena, which will also include performances by New Order and Doves.
Marr also announced that The Healers’ second album is currently in the works, with a tentative (and vague) release date set for Spring 2006. Songs currently planned for the album include “The Sparks Of Life”, “Run In The Dust”, “Reign Down The New Days”, “I’ve Seen More”, “Save Ourselves Again” and “Denial Denial”.
