It is time to break out the spandex pants, start practicing your finest rock posturing and rehearse your best guitar licks, as the 2006 US Air Guitar Championships are on the way. I have to admit that I am slightly disappointed in America’s competitors in the World Championship last year, as we were only able to reach 7th place. C’mon America! To help find the best of the best, the US championships are doubling in size, with regional competitions in at least ten markets.
Besides fame and glory, if you need another reason to work on your air riffs, the World Championships will be held in Finland. When else would you get a chance to visit Finland? Isn’t it worth a little humiliation?
The New York City regional competition will take place on March 2 at the Knitting Factory. Other cities confirmed to have competitions include Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Tulsa. More will be announced soon. The US finals will be held in New York in June, with a specific date and location to be determined soon.
For our fellow Tripwire readers who are attending this year’s SXSW festivities, you can catch the premier of Air Guitar Nation. Yes, a feature-length documentary has been made on the Air Guitar Championship phenomenon. The premier will happen on March 12th.
So stop dreaming about fame and fortune. Make it a reality by becoming the next World Air Guitar Champion. Although I am not sure fame and fortune comes with the title, isn’t it worth a shot? You’ll have to defeat last year’s US champion, Fatima “Rockness Monster” Hoang, so you’d better start practicing soon!
