Party: Motherfucker + New York Dolls + NYC = Awesome

I’ve been going to the Motherfucker parties from when they first started in small bars like Niagara and Meow Mix to present day huge venues like the roller rink, Roxy. MOFO has always been an awesome time, but this President’s Day celebration proved to be one of my favorites!

A live performance by the New York Dolls was on the docket, so feather boas, transvestites, sparkling platforms, drag queens, hims, hers, and shims were all there to enjoy the LUV in! The party was in a cathedral church turned nightclub called Avalon (formerly the famous Limelight). This was where some of the most famous club kids were born (go rent Party Monster if you don’t know what I’m talking about).

My friend and I arrived around 10:30, zipped past the long line and entered the club just in time to catch the vodka/Redbull open bar. By 11:45pm we had guzzled down three drinks, but alas, still no sign of the Dolls. No complaints from me however, as I was having a blast and so was everyone else! Photographers were documenting the night, including local paparazzi - Lastnightsparty.com - running around snapping up all the pretty people.

The party was filled with glitter, glam(rock) and everything else in between weird and wonderful. Party producers, Michael T, Justine D, Johnny T, and Georgie were running around with walkie-talkies making sure everything was running smoothly. Cameramen were getting footage for what will become the documentary of a party that brings punk rockers, hipsters, electro-heads, and Goths together to form Motherfucker.

By the time the Dolls went on I had walked through the entire club, bumped into friends I hadn’t seen in forever and smiled for the cameras of various photographers. The Dolls performed one of my favorite songs, “Looking for a Kiss,” along with many more dirty rock & roll classics. Everyone was snapping pictures, dancing (alone or with friends), and singing along to every lyric.

The band looked just as rockin’ as always while lead vocalist David Johansen was dressed in a long-sleeved shirt covered in what looked like hundreds of silver fish.  Guitarist Sylvain Sylvain plucked his strings perfectly while buckling his knees in a crotch-painful pose. You could feel the beats in your chest while the bassist, drummer, and keyboardist banged their hearts out to every star-studded song.

I danced until I could dance no more and sang at the top of my lungs until I had no voice. I arrived back at my apartment about 4am and stumbled up the stairs to find my boyfriend still awake, so I filled him in on my night. Like a kid who just came back from an amusement park high on cotton candy, I went on and on about my fun filled six hours. The next morning when I looked in my purse I found that I had written all my notes on cocktail napkins. So here I am, writing my Motherfucker party review from my notes, seven little napkins smudged with red lipstick and black eye makeup.
