Sing Song Sung EP

I first heard demo tracks from La Rocca when the Dangerbird Records crew stopped by our offices to give us their '06 preview last year. From the opening chords of what has become the opening track on their new EP, Sing Song Sung, it was instantly obvious that this band had the potential to become superstars. This Dublin-based quartet isn't trying to pave new ground or start a new musical trend. Rather, their songs are straight ahead rock & roll, with a sound that is instantly memorable, honest and timeless. Frontman Bjorn Baillie's vocals come straight from the heart, unpretentious with the throaty delivery of somebody who has enjoyed his fair share of whiskey drinks. The EP kicks off with the title track, which should be on every rock radio station from coast to coast. This stomping tune has everything you need to make a great single - handclaps, an infectiously catchy chorus, and a sing-along melody that will have you humming this one all day long. When it comes down to Irish rock bands, it is hard to ignore the influences of the granddaddy of them all, U2. While La Rocca is in no way attempting to emulate the pop of U2, some of the falsetto vocals on "Home" do remind me just a bit of Bono. Is that a bad thing? Hell no. The boys turn their amps up to eleven on the closing track, "Cambodia". La Rocca has no problem getting their rock on, yet they still manage to balance the crunchy guitars with the rolling line of a honky-tonk piano. Bjorn's vocals passionately slap you in the face, while Nick Haworth pounds the keys, Simon Baillie plays the shit out of his bass and Alan Redmond puts some fresh dents in his drum kit. This kind of sincere rock & roll is a rare gem in the vast abyss of musical monotony. And just think, this is only an appetizer for their full-length album, coming out later this year! La Rocca are the kind of guys I want to throw down a few pints of Guinness with. Just some honest dudes making great music. My suggestion is to snag a copy of this EP, open up a bottle of your favorite beverage, and get Drink Drank Drunk.
