London-based quartet Mohair just wrapped up their set at the Trading Post. They were the first band on a bill that includes Jose Gonzalez, Birdmonster, Eagles Of Death Metal, and David Ford (to name a few). I'm not super familiar with this band, but I DO know that this was their first proper US show (because lead vocalist, Tom, told me). Sporting a thin tie, suit, and long fro-ish hair, Tom quirkily belted out songs from the band's forthcoming album, Small Talk, which was recorded in a barn in middle-of-nowhere Scotland and will be issued by their very own label (Ear Candy) later this year. Packed with harmonies and a '06s pop-inspired garage vibe, their songs also seemed to blend in the cool angular guitars and off-kilter rhythms of their modern day UK contemporaries.
It's starting to get really hot down here in Austin. The two black bean and egg tacos and side of ketchup-drenched potatoes that I destroyed at (used-to-be-hidden-gem) Mexican food joint Las Manitas are beginning to catch up with me and Jose Gonzalez (who I not-so-secretly have a plutonic crush on) is about to take the stage. SXSW is staring to kick into full swing. Oh, and we're expecting rain.
