Bring It Back

From Kansas to San Francisco to Conneticut, Mates of State's Kori Gardner (organ, vox) and Jason Hammond (drums, vox) continue their affair of evocative love chords on Bring It Back, the duo's debut album on Barsuk Records and follow-up to My Solo Project (2004). The new record offers the bearing threads of everlasting affection, resonating with an endearing grace of inflection and a never-ending spree of resolution. "Think Long" combines the commanding influence of beckoning against hushful haute vocals, while "Fraud In the '80s" builds into a rushing carnival. Bring It Back is an upbeat blend of catchy pop that translucently layers deeper currents beneath initial happiness and confronts a humbling sense of contentment, made clear throughout tracks like "Running Out." As real-life weds, Mates of State express the depth of couple-dom through keyboard and drum snares that harmoniously mesh into a partnership original in its own right.
