North Carolina's Seth Kauffman Plots May Trip To NYC

Asheville, NC-based singer/songwriter Seth Kauffman will take to the road in May for a very brief tour in support of his wildly unique debut album, Ting. The album, which was released in late March via HighTone and which I totally meant to review for the Tripwire following SXSW but never found the time, is definitely one of the most original records I've heard all year. Using intentionally rudimentary recording techniques and a spectrum of musical styles (Seth traveled to Jamaica and the African bush to study polyrhythms), Ting is something of a musical time machine that draws heavily on old folk and early black and roots music. Seth actually wrote, produced, and engineered the entire album himself, not to mention played every single instrument.

Kauffman will play a few shows in North Carolina in late May leading up to three NYC gigs on May 23, 24, and 26, at the Parkside Lounge, Trash Bar, and Pete's Candy Store, respectively. The Real Mothers, Seth's band, will be onboard for all dates. Here's the full schedule:

05.20.06 - Durham, NC (WXDU live performance)
