Pledge drives are a bummer any way you cut it. Sure, your $65 is tax deductable, and you're shining bright with that Channel 13 tote bag - but it's not as if your donation means Nova or Bleak House will start putting up Desperate Housewives numbers, y'know? All Things Considered does not have Angie Martinez shook! At least WFMU has their pledge gift game tight. During the station's annual begathon, they play host to indie rock patron saints Yo La Tengo, who open up the request lines and allow callers to pick a cover song for the band to try in exchange for their donation. The best of these on-the-spot jams have now been collected on Yo La Tengo Is Murdering The Classics, available for purchase on their site. The band says, "order at your own risk. No refunds." But with some stylish sleeve art by Adrian Tomine alongside YLT's flavorful quirk, this will probably be worth the rubles - be sure to save some change for the cause, tho.
