Whether it was the 90+ degree temperatures or my first visit to Wrigley Field of the season, last weekend felt like an unofficial kick-off party to the summer in the Windy City. I started things off on Friday with TWO fabulous indie rock shows at two fabulous Chi-town hot spots - Canada's The Lovely Feathers @ Schubas and Chicago's very own Office @ Empty Bottle (followed by a little after-partying at new late night bar, The Continental). Luckily, Saturday's Cubs vs Tigers game didn't start 'till three, so there was ample time to recover in order to begin the process all over again. Cubs got crushed, we went to a pal's to BBQ and play late night kick-ball and then to a magic brownie-filled B-day bash. Yikes!
Sunday, typically the day for rest, was transformed into an end-of-weekend send-off with the first Chicago performance from San Francisco's Birdmonster. I remember them being good at SXSW, but damn, these (really good looking) youngsters truly lived up to the hype last night with an intimate show at The Hideout. This will be the first of many Sunday evening buzz band summer shows @ Hideout as part of the newly-resurrected TheNewNew party. I brought my trusty Canon Powershot along for the ride, so take a peek below at the unofficial Chicagoland summer kick off (in reverse chronological order) below.
With Radiohead in town this week and Intonation starting this weekend, it looks like we're just getting warmed up.
