Fela Kuti Lives Again, In Brooklyn

Fela Kuti is by far one of the most influential, important, and inspiring men in the history of music. He took James Brown and politics and made them into Afrobeat. And beyond that, there is NOTHING better to listen to while walking the busy streets of New York. Expensive Shit is one of my favorite records of all time.

Hell, a college professor of mine dedicated two months to teaching us about him. It was an African Music class, but hey, that's what college is for, right? Instead of telling his expansive and amazing life long story here, you can go hear it this weekend in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Academy of Music is putting on all star benefit this Friday and Saturday that will recreate the album. The concert will feature interpretations of Fela's songs by a handful of fantastic artists. Go here to learn more about it.
