Now With More Fire

“Onwards and upwards” has become something of a FADER mantra lately, and we think FADER 43, now downloadable, sits right up there atop the mountain of achievements. The accompanying DJ-mixed podcast of music from F43 is definitely one of our best yet with certified jams from cover dudes the Good, the Bad & the Queen (pictured above) and Machel Montano, the sunny soul of Aloe Blacc, Santogold and Spank Rock’s dubby diss track, sensi-rockers from Collie Buddz and Stephen Marley and lots more. Sign up for our podcasts on iTunes to get it, or subscribe via yr favorite RSS reader here. You can also download the F43 audio by itself here, and get the full tracklist after the jump.

A Block Of Speakers

Each year on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, every DJ in Miami brings his and her soundsystem to Liberty City, a neighborhood on the northwestern edge of town, to battle for supremacy. Known as the MLK Day Parade, it has less to do with marching for the man of honor than celebrating music and culture and generally creating the biggest block party in America that no one has ever heard of. Walshy Killa from the Black Chiney Soundsystem (who happen to be in our new issue) was kind enough to be our guide, and even though the police tried to rain on it, the parade undoubtedly went off. After the jump, read Walshy’s running commentary to Oscar Hidalgo’s mindblowingly awesome photographs.

Yummy Birthday To You

On principle, we couldn’t normally shout out any party where entry requirements include “Gents: Sneakers OK w/button down shirt or fashionable sweater” only to note further down the flyer, “Moet special: 2 bottles for $200 + gratuity” (there’s a reason the new Plant comp is gonna be called Bottle Service Killed New York, y’all). However, we’ll suck it up and make an exception for former Gen F star Yummy Bingham, who will be celebrating her 21st birthday at Eugene’s on 24th St in NYC tonight. Did you know we never searched Yummy on YouTube before? There’s all sorts of good stuff there, like the seldom-aired clip for “Come Get It” with Jadakiss, and these amazing camera phone videos of Ms Bingham wining at the Notting Hill Carnival in London last year, one of which is linked above.

Hype Hype

This evening, in conjunction with Sangament, The FADER presents Beat Bazaar at the Canal Room in NYC, featuring DJ Rekha and our very own Contributing Editor, Eddie Stats, who describes his weekly party as an “ultimate fighting system for music selection.” Special guest selector DJ Kayper (giving you the fingers above) from
the BBC Asian Network will be in the building playing everything from Amerie to Punjabi MC. Stats vouched for Kayper’s deck truthiness, a compliment rarer than ice caps in Greenland, so take this opportunity to find out what he’s on about.

Live And Direct

Tonight on FADER’s “The Let Out” show on East Village Radio (made possible by Dewar’s), our guests include Los Angeles DJ Desert Eagles (pictured above, in what looks to be some cold weather gear that’s both rad and particularly unsuited to LA climes) as well as Chicagoans Hollywood Holt and DJ Mano. Eagles is in town to play Brooklyn’s Savalas on Saturday, while Holt and Mano will be rocking the White Lightning party in good ole Manhattan later tonight. Listen live from 6-8pm EST or grab the podcast later on, the glass box on 1st Ave is sure to be a scene.

Dance With The Devil

We’ve slept for a combined seven minutes this short week– in service of future greatness for you and yours, of course– and we’re feeling a little loopy heading into the weekend. So if you go to Demon Days in Brooklyn tonight, don’t be surprised to see us doing some odd shit like proofing imaginary copy, whatever that might look like. We’ll try to keep it together even though we know Detroit techno icon Carl Craig and Beats In Space-man Tim Sweeney are likely to play wildly disorienting sets. In the meantime, read Edwin “Stats” Houghton’s fully-focused feature on Craig from F42 after the jump.
