Tonight at Studio B in Greenpoint, there’s going to be a very special party in tribute to our friend Disco D. DJ Funk, DJ Assault, Spankrock, Annalyze, Stretch Armstrong and Derek Plaslaiko will be providing the music, and all proceeds from the event will benefit the Ann Arbor, MI teen center Neutral-Zone.org. Full flyer and info after the jump, we’ll see you there.

Planet Rock
- story THE FADER
Imagine you’re Al Gore. You made a blockbuster doc out of climate science in last year’s An Inconvenient Truth, you’ve traveled the world campaigning for environmental responsibilty and governmental accountability, and you’ve generally handled losing in the most dignified manner imaginable. And then you decide to throw a global music festival to raise awareness for our current climate crisis, and the only celebrities you can get to show up at the press conference are Cameron Diaz and Pharrell. You’d probably say, “What the fuck, Earth?” We’re okay with Cameron (surfs, probably drives a Prius) and love Pharrell in general, but his Bentleys get 15 mpg, and he’s the self-made poster boy for conspicuous consumption. Not exactly the best role model, UNLESS the absence of neckjewels in this photo reveals something deeper. Maybe Pharrell’s next move is hemp dookie chains and veggie Benzes. It could happen. Al is a persuasive dude and understands cultural cachet and mass appeal better than most (remember these?), and may have shown P the light. There’s money in that light. That’s all conjecture, of course, but for certain, ol’ Albert signed up some major names for his multi-continent concert already, names that will draw a massive audience. But it’s the addition of our dudes Bloc Party and Akon that surprised us more than anything. Global superstars! The 24-hour televised event takes place in seven cities around the world on July 7th, three days after Americans shoot smoking rockets into the atmosphere, and hopefully the Faith Hill/Tim McGraw performance will get a certain world leader to pay attention.

Magic Tricks
- story THE FADER
Of all the clothing booths in all of Magic Trade Show la-la-land last week in Vegas, Pegleg NY was undoubtedly one of our favorites– check for the neons and pastel combo the boys have planned for Fall ‘07. As Harry of Pegleg will tell you, being an “it” booth has its highs and lows (8am crowd control issues). We asked Harry to take snaps of visitors at the Pegleg corner– from the most awesome to the most freak-some. Some, like Prince of Gino Green (above) are identifiable, others like “will rap for food” dude, are just plain lost. For knitted angel wings and grass green jeans and an animation of Pegleg’s booth construction, check after the jump.

We’re All In The Same Gang Gang
- story THE FADER
Last Friday night we braved the cold and hit up Studio B to see our dudes Gang Gang Dance play a set of old and new material and, if we do say so ourselves, completely kill it in the process. Before we had our minds blown though, we listened to ex-Lungfish frontman Daniel Higgs do his weird “what if Joanna Newsom was a dude who sang about dark chasms of love” thing. We weren’t not feeling it, but we think that kind of thing might work better in a concert hall than, say, a giant warehouse. By the time GGD came out we were juggling our drinks and catching what we could on our handycam (clipped above). There might have been an alarming number of abnormally tall dudes always in front of us, but that didn’t stop us from getting really into Lizzi Bougatsos’ kinda Bjorkian sing-yelping. Gang Gang’s main appeal is their ability to make us and seemingly everyone else drop their musical pretensions and just dance. We maybe even heard our friend say: “This is the most visceral live show I’ve ever seen, it makes me forget I exist.” Sure that might be a little hyperbolic, but isn’t that really just the sign of a damn good live band?
