Things just got a little bit sweeter for Los Angeles' KCRW. The station was recently awarded a $600,000 three-year grant from the Annenberg Foundation to develop their business models with web casting and online music services. According to HITS, the station's GM Ruth Seymour stated, "Public broadcasting faces unique challenges in the online world. We have spent years educating the audience about the relationship between listener contributions and programming. But that relationship doesn't appear to resonate online. Many users listening on the Web may not even understand that they are hearing a real radio station. This is especially true for KCRW's most successful podcast programs."
In a time when commercial radio seems to be spiraling down the porcelain throne, it is nice to see quality noncommercial programming getting the attention it desperately deserves. Congrats KCRW!
