According to the YouTube stats, R. Kelly's video for the "I'm A Flirt (Remix)" has been up for five days so excuse our lack of timeliness, but we just got to it now. As usual, it seems like just a normal radio hit until you rewind a couple times and realize that there's mad R Kelly mindgarden shit tucked into what seems like just your everyday Chi-Town steppers monster smash. Ho hum. The ultra hi-def scalp pore shots of Kells's braids. The super pro Tip verse (Tip's recent work is a whole ’nother thing). The flagrant T-Pain verse. Kells snatching it right back after T-Pain has kind of killed it. The perhaps veiled reference to Tip with the King shirt, and the video girls crowning Kells with, um, a crown. But of course Kells then takes the fired shot back by calling himself "the king of R&B," which is not, of course, a title Tip has laid claim to, although maybe he should after this and "My Love." It would really be funny if Tip made a video and called himself "the pied piper of the South," but we're not holding our breath. Anyway, none of those moments are as straight up out as the "Ignition (Remix)" shot where Kells and his braids turn around like he's sitting on a turntable, but that's not to say they're normal, so don't let the rap vid trappings (video girls, shiny chains, cars, etc) fool you. It is also worth noting that Kells has the peculiar habit of making monster mash singles out of remixes, as though he got back from playing hoops at 5AM and hit the studio to put some finishing touches on a deep album cut and suddenly it hit him like a ton of bricks - hidden somewhere in that piano vamp is a fucking beast, something to help usher in Spring Fever for radio listeners across the Americas. So he teases it out and calls a lot of famous friends. Although we all know R. Kelly doesn't have friends like that. T-Pain, for instance, isn't allowed to call him "Bobby."
