Audio: Happy Thoughts
- story THE FADER
As part of our ongoing efforts to be smart, we watched Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple on PBS last night and aside from trashing what was left of our innocence, it reminded us of Timmy Thomas’ (that’s him up top) megaweird 1972 charttopper “Why Can’t We Live Together?” which played during footage of the last pre-Kool-Aid party. Super ooky and effective, but we still felt compelled to put TT’s joint up today in order to separate the dream from the nightmare. So here it is, a sort of proto-snap organ grinder about peace and unity, which, if we tried, we could connect to the other Jim Jones, the death of hip-hop, the rise of the South, the new Rick Rawwsss Miami and Thomas’ old Glades Record’s Miami, the power of positive thinking, the naivete of utopianism, the divisive nature of the internets, cough syrup and of course Akon. But we won’t! Just enjoy the jam and live for moment!
