Late last week we blotted the soy sauce stains from our jeans and tucked our shirts in as we tried to look just a little classy for the The Music of Bruce Springsteen benefit at Carnegie Hall. As you may have heard, 20 artists covered the Boss' songs, but what you may not have heard was that Craig Finn's hand gesticulations were out of control, Patti Smith spit on the stage (she wrote "Piss Factory," so she's allowed to keep it gutter), M Ward took on our sleeper favorite "I'm Going Down" and Springsteen turned the second half of his "Rosalita" into a self-deprecating personal history. The lady sitting next to us has a son who goes to school with his son and she said Springsteen's the kindest man—doing benefits and speaking to the kids for assemblies. As usual, we were charmed.
