One Man Panda Man

June 19, 2007

Last night, right after we spent half our paycheck on ridiculously jamming Panda Bear merch (sad disclosure: we dinged the vinyl in the cab home), we crammed into the back of NYC’s Bowery Ballroom to see our man Noah Lennox bka Panda Bear perform in one of four shows to support his recent masterpiece Person Pitch. As far as late-breaking heatrocks go, it’s a pretty solid lunch money wager that PP is gonna make everyone’s Best of Oh-Seven lists, but our YouTubery thus far has yet to reveal any sort of mindblowing live Panda shows. Here’s the thing about the solo performer: he performs alone! We got butterflies when we saw likkle Panda all by himself on stage, with his mic and sound board and also some crazily menacing, sometimes corny but somehow wildly appropriate and well-synched video art that included terrifying footage of a Great White shark eating some sort of dead marlin (don’t quote us on that, we’re not fish enthusiasts). At any rate: did he come through? Yes! Were there some uncomfortable, not-quite-hitting moments? Certainly! Did that bother us? No! Did he play Animal Collective jams? Yes! Was it that mind melting outerspace song “#1” from Strawberry Jam? Correct! Did we at some point during the show feel as if we were underwater and floating in a weightless state? Definitely! Did it inspire us to post Todd Cole's photos from our Panda feature in Issue 45? Indeed, and they are after the jump! (PS-You can still get that issue for free, brothers and sisters.)
