I'll never forget rummaging through the vinyl selection at the record store inside NYC's Cake Shop one day when I stumbled upon Kitchens Of Distinction's outstanding 1991 album, Strange Free World. As a young music fan in the early '90s who religiously watched 120 Minutes , I remembered the video for the single "Drive That Fast" and immediately had to snag this album.
KOD was a London trio that formed in 1986 by college buddies Dan Goodwin and Julian Swales. Bassist/singer Patrick Fitzgerald met Swales at a random party, who ended up putting his medical career on hold to join the band. KOD's sound was easily a precursor to what would become one of my favorite sounds to come out of the alternative scene in the '90s, shoegaze.
The band called it a day in 1996, giving us four full-length albums, plenty of singles and EPs as well as a best of compilation that surfaced in 2003. So here it is, a personal favorite of mine, KOD's "Drive That Fast."
