Schnipper’s Slept On

Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Soiled Mattress and the Springs’ Springtime!. Download “Tidal Wave” for free here (which is actually from Honk Bonk Bonk! which isn’t out on vinyl yet so I don’t have that shit because I don’t really fuck with CDs too much). Buy Springtime! here and read about it sort of after the jump. Sort of read about it I mean. You definitely are gonna read after the jump. Look it’s been a long couple of weeks.

I’ve been eating a lot of oranges lately. Whole Foods has these Minneola tangelos that I buy two at a time. It just seems like the right thing to do. I was in the Upper West Side the other day to see Abe Vigoda and Soiled Mattress and the Springs and I wanted something sweet, so I went to Garden of Eden and ended up buying this weird peanut butter tart. I really like peanut butter candy things, so I got seduced, but I should have had an orange.

The show was at the Underground Lounge at 107th and West End. It shredded. Some girl walked in on me in the bathroom but whatever, it was nice out and I had my prescription sunglasses. Soiled Mattress don’t have a stand for their floor tom, it sits on a milk crate. I saw Abe Vigoda for the third time in three days. I had a Corona, I bought people drinks. Soiled Mattress has a song called “Someone is Drinking Water” and then someone was drinking water. Everyone said their keyboardist looked like he was in a psych band and they were all right.

After the show I thought about the Coctails. Soiled Mattress sounds like that. Then I thought about the express train and thought I might walk down to it. I got to 96th, decided to keep going to 72nd. Then I saw Zabar’s and thought I would buy some sponges that grow like those dinosaur toys when you get them wet. But Zabar’s was closed. So I bought some bagels at H and H. I went to Loehmann’s and looked for Polo v-neck undershirts but they didn’t have any. It was weird, I went around to the back aisle and there was some employee hiding by the discount undershirts reading a book on a folding chair. We both got scared.
