Schnipper’s Slept On

Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Soulja Slim featuring Mystikal, “I’ll Pay For it (remix). Listen below and read after the jump.

Last week I got snooty halfway through Slept On and asked “where were you?” It’s a weird question. You shouldn’t have to have been anywhere, it doesn’t make you any closer to a nebulous true experience. When this was some enveloping life tenet I remember being really mad about a restaurant in Cape Cod that promised “authentic Mexican food.” Just do you, we’re on a bay in the Atlantic Ocean, I just want that shit to taste good. But, anyway, where am I these days? I am at the Steven Alan sample sale and I’m taking a really long walk on a path in suburban Connecticut and I’m on the subway running into people ten years older than me who design clothes for professional football teams and I’m at brunch on the sidewalk talking to Jewish dudes about their weddings. Fuck that sounds kind of lame? (Sometimes I write this shit and wonder if I should tell it to other people but once it’s written down it’s kind of not mine, right? Or maybe I’m making this all up and where I am is stunt doubling for Nicholas Cage in Ghost Rider and tutoring gifted orphans in calculus. Fuck it, whatever). Anyway where I used to be all the time was buying really cheap rap records. I think I got this after Soulja Slim died. Wherever he was, I was not (turns out he was “down South/ where PAM means pussy, asshole and mouth” [actually Mystikal says that line and now he is in jail for sexual battery, so there you go]).

But what I am saying is that last weekend someone asked me what my favorite kind of music was and I couldn’t think of how to answer so I thought about my iTunes top 25 most played. Arthur Russell, old Young Jeezy, “I’m On Fire,” Smog, LCD Soundsystem, Abe Vigoda, Vampire Weekend, “Duffle Bag Boy,” Telepathe. I was like “Uh, guitar pop and things that are poppy and catchy and, uh, I don’t know things that are like rock music but not quite ever rock music and I don’t know I don’t know” but the point is that it’s probably not shit like the “I’ll Pay For It” remix these days. But when I put this on, I remember how gnarly a shriek Soulja Slim had. Where’s the space we had in each other’s lives? Mine as listener, him as maker. The other day I got an email saying I had a private message on TJ’s DJs and I was kind of surprised and excited but it was just spam trying to get me to look at a Buddhim website or something. Gorilla Zoe, save me.

But, until I eat a Zoe sized Christian wafer or whatever they call those things I am just going to lean on old Schnipper size classics. I got a couple copies of this record at once and gave one or two away (I think I still have a double somewhere?). And it is slaying “Silly” or whatever people listen to (I am so old and only like Hercules and Love Affair now, fyi). Who produced this? It makes me face squinch like a lemon in the eye and cutting onions. “For every one that I lose, I bounce back with two.” That is logic I subscribe to. “I pay for it, I pay for it, if I want it, I pay for it.” If you take away the fact that he is talking about sex I like that this song is about supporting yourself and not taking freebees. It’s kind of feminist or something. And now my life has come full circle.
