Man Of The Moment: Steve McQueen

June 19, 2008

We know we spend a lot of time talking about the trends that we’re feeling or people we’re envious of, but one particular question usually comes up when we’re talking to designers, Who are your style icons? No doubt interviewers have been asking interviewees this question for a minute, but no one ever asks us, and well, aren’t we a little peaked that we never get asked.

When Pavilion Books released Steve McQueen: A Life in Pictures last month, we were quite the foolishly giddy school kids in the office, and we realized while shuffling through the glossy pages, Steve McQueen is just as style relevant today as he was forty years ago. Looking at pictures of him kicking back barefoot in cropped slacks or leaning against a car in thick cable knit and corduroy (all with that relentlessly mischievous smile), we can’t help but be a little jealous that we’re not in on that life. It's like we’re conjuring up images of speedy little convertibles on old beach roads and vacation homes in the south of France with windows that wrap around from east to west (hit us back if you know any journalists who live this life.) Despite all the mystique of a life on holiday, we really just wanted to get to the heart of an amazing style ideal and rediscover what makes Steve so great, and after a hard look at the man who played hard so well, we see now that he made being fashionable look so damn comfortable.
