Schnipper’s Slept On

Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week he is writing about Trap Squad’s “What’s Happenin’?” 12-inch which apparently you cannot give them money for anywhere. Listen to the song below and read about it after the jump.
If anyone ever asked me what my favorite thing to do is I would probably say to sleep. Or at least prolong that little while before you are asleep when you know you will be asleep soon. But barring some bizarre change in the economy and/or my comfort level with weird sleep fetishists, I don’t think that is going to be my job ever. But when I listen to Fabo, it sounds like his favorite thing to do is to rap. Or, to broaden that, to make music with his mouth. His verse on “What’s Happenin’” sounds like people scarfing hamburgers when they are hungry. Healthy appetite type people who haven’t eaten in days, pure joy and narrow focus. Because then, nothing else exists but bun and patty. “Bankhead what’s happenin’?/ Say it again, what’s happenin’?” he says. His voice is warbled rubber. The beat is cheap keys and echoed fingersnaps, music for laying concrete or the opening credits of a film made in 2016 about being a teenager in 2006. I imagine Trap Squad recorded this at a studio more than a home studio but less than something fancy. There were probably friends there and Fabo was like “Hey, this is fun.” He always wears his socks pulled up, they were probably goofing on him, which is the point. And, at some point, he got paid. Probably not a lot (this song isn’t available on iTunes). But I will tell you once I heard this song coming out a car and for the amount it made me stoked I can only imagine the relative pride if I was the one who recorded it and made money from it. What if recordings of me sleeping made people dance?
