The FADER Issue 34
Dec 2005

For The FADER‘s Second Film Issue Ever, we took to the popcorn with extra butter and re-rented the classics of celluloid history (Adventures In Babysitting, Days Of Heaven and I’m Gonna Git You Sucka), then circled the wagons and realized we had no more idea about film than we did last issue. Oh well! But we have tried to approach the filmic landscape in a classically FADER way: with enthusiasm, curiosity, bragadoccio and Twizzlers. You’ll find our definitive list of Video Directors To Watch Right Now, bits and pieces on luminaries like Werner Herzog and Inconsiderate Cell Phone Man and profiles of young guns like Asher D and Tim Orr. We also dig deep and give you the history and hotness on Thailand’s New Wave cinema and Three 6 Mafia’s forays into home video. Somehow, we managed to corral the indubitable Sean Young (Rachel in Blade Runner, cineasses)-expert lenswoman Tierney Gearon captured the cult queen at home, in the pool, on the phone and everywhere in-between. Rounding it all out is a series of epic photographs inspired by film stills, shot by our very own Andrew Dosunmu-look through them real fast and it’s almost like watching a movie!

But we wouldn’t be true to our colors if we didn’t also try to tell you what we’re fucking with cinematically and sonically. This issue’s cover star, Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) swings in the year with her best album to date-a blues ‘n’ rhythm meditation on the legacy of Memphis. Über producer and Nawlins superstar Mannie Fresh has been breaking epic tunes with everyone and we caught up with him as he criss-crossed the country, escaping meteorological peril and offers from the Game. Finally, extraspecially, Eddie Stats sat Sean Paul and Sizzla down together to talk about their recent transmogrification: from one drop anthems to club heaters, we’re not sure what JA’s lined up next-and neither are they. So keep listening, good people of the world: now’s the time to sit down by that fire and think about the state of the world, your home, your hi fi-and just make sure 2006 is better, stronger and much, much louder.
