Schnipper’s Slept On

Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Lync’s These Are Not Fall Colors. Listen to “Turtle” from the album below, buy These Are Not Fall Colors and read Schnipper’s thoughts on the album after the jump.

So much bad shit has happened to the United States lately. Sarah Palin, the Eagles losing last night, the intense fall out of an economic base that I read about but do not fully understand. A friend found a box of three abandoned kittens and two of them have died so far and the third probably has pneumonia. These Are Not Fall Colors came out fourteen years ago, when Bill Clinton was president. Around that time, I remember watching a panel on the Rikki Lake show about his plan to reform welfare. I did not understand that, I do now.

What are fall colors? Brown and orange? It seems reductive to decide your palette based on leaves and light jackets. Halfway through the summer I bought white Keds. I had been wearing black Keds, the same model, but they didn’t look right. White Keds, when they are brand new, look like lady shoes. I sucked it up. I stopped wearing button down shirts and started wearing only white Polo v-neck T-shirts. It was consistent, if anything. I went to Bungalow 8 for a fashion show and had pit stains. That was easy.

Songs on this album are called “Angelfood Fodder and Vitamins,” “Turtle,” “Pennies to Save” and “Clay Fighter.” Lyrics to Turtle are “I have trouble getting started,” which they say over and over. Am I being nostalgic? I was twelve when this came out, I was taking tons of prednisone and lived in the Connecticut suburbs. I think my dog died that year. Was Clinton that great? Sarah Palin was in her thirties when this came out. She was probably smoking weed in the Alaskan wilderness thinking about how there is better hunting elsewhere. And she was also having kids. If you were born in 1994 you have known more than half your life with George W Bush as president.
