Paul "HR" Hudson, the legendary frontman of Bad Brains and noted as one of the pioneers of hardcore punk (or the newly revived term "Afro-punk"), will release his solo album Hey Wella on October 21st and play an official CMJ show to celebrate the release.
Throughout their career, HR and Bad Brains incorporated sounds of punk, reggae, heavy metal, and funk to the mix, making them known worldwide for not only their music, but also their exciting and high-energy shows where HR would dominate the crowd. Where as BBs sound infused punk rock and reggae rhythms and themes, HR's solo material is more closely rooted in reggae, although the press release insists he still "showcases his musical genius, impressive singing, and dynamic performances by exploring the worlds of hardcore and hip-hop beats as well."
With music written by Grant "OG" Garretson (drums and guitar) and produced by a three time Grammy winner, David Darlington, it will be interesting to see how Hey Wella is received by the many adoring Bad Brains fans - many of whom cite HR as the main reason for Bad Brains originally disbanding. Regardless, those who want to see the legendary frontman will have their chance during CMJ, as his label, DC Hardcore, LLC will be hosting an official CMJ showcase at BLVD (part of Crash Mansion) where he will be playing along side Brooklyn punks Team Robespierre, New Zealand's Die!Die!Die! as well as The Arms and Goes Cube.
