Like another chapter out of When Bad Things Happen to Good People, the folks at Daptone Records were robbed last night, losing an incalculable amount of sound equipment and musical instruments. To add insult to injury, they weren't insured.
A letter from Daptone Co-Founder Gabriel Roth details the items they know are missing at present. Roth said that police asked that nothing be touched until the studios could be fingerprinted, so the amount missing from drawers and cabinets could be far worse.
Roth said a security guard has been hired to watch the building over night at the urging of police, who advised that the robbers may return with a truck after having seen what was in the space. The studio will also be installing a roll-down front gate and an alarm system this week, and securing insurance.
Roth said they had been shopping around with different insurance companies earlier in the month, but had not signed any policies. It has to be devastating and frustrating for a studio who will this Friday host Rod Stewart to lay down some tracks. Rod Stewart recording at your place and no insurance? Of course the unfortunate thing about hind-sight is it does tend to be 20/20.
Regardless, it's a terrible loss for Daptone and the soul community. Roth has requested help with keeping an eye out on eBay, Craigslist and at local music shops for the sales of stolen Daptone equipment, as well as sending Daptone information on any studio package deals on equipment for sale or rental.
In his letter, Roth said the Daptone family is keeping its collective chin up about the robbery, and even noted that the burglars got away with a huge, heavy, unwieldy safe, dropping other more valuable things along the way. The safe? Empty.
