Ceci Bastida, "Controlar"

Since cutting her teeth as a superyoung youth in intrepid Mexican punk band Tijuana NO!, LA/Tijuana-based Ceci Bastida has made her way as a more serious, more studied songwriter. She spent years playing keyboards in Latin American pop star Julieta Venegas' band, and releasing her own lovely, complex tracks through her myspace—they range from soulful pop to Tijuana sound-collage to passionate but way uncliche'd singer-songwritery jams ("No Te Digan Que No" is a longtime fave, you should listen to it on her myspace). This track, produced by Spankrock/Santigold/Amanda Blank/everyone super producer XXXchange, places her in a more new wave context, but her voice is ever so husky and lovely—dramatic pop. Bonus! Check out "SOS," on which she sings the hook for Soulico and Pigeon John. (Via The FADER)
