Schnipper’s Slept On
- story THE FADER
Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Rich Boy’s “Get To Poppin’” 12-inch. Listen to the song here and read Schnipper’s thoughts on it after the jump.
Thanks, coworkers, for telling me that Cam’ron played last night. What, I don’t like Cam’ron? Shit. Thanks for coming in to the office and being so excited about the concert and reenacting it and sending me the YouTube videos and saying, “Start at 2:30 because that is the best part when he does all the rapping.” Like I wouldn’t want to know by myself. I don’t need to experience all the crummy parts, the Cam’ron fatigue and frustration, the late arrival and a lot of guys who also know all the words? No, I probably don’t. Honestly, if you invited me I probably wouldn’t have gone. I slept nine hours last night, read the article about Grizzly Bear in New York Magazine on the couch. Did you read that? It’s kind of bad.
I interviewed someone last week who asked me who the “rap person” at FADER is. I tried to answer and tell him that we all like it, but truth is that’s basically everyone but me. I started out my writing career here interviewing rappers and have done so a bit recently, but not much. I just listen to Young Jeezy. Am I not cool or is rap less good or both? Seriously, the amount of time I have spent with Gucci Mane is almost zero. Remember “Icy”? That song was so whatever. I did listen to a lot of “Turn My Swag On” in cars recently. I’m reaching, I know.
It took so long to find this Rich Boy record. I had killed the mp3 by the time I fished it out of the dollar bin at Plan 9 in Charlottesville. (Seriously, right now in between songs on my headphones listening to Phoenix I hear my co-worker discussing sunset yoga and her desire to go on a yoga retreat. How is that hip-hop? Other non hip-hop things: my arm is irritated by the to-do list I taped to my laptop, so I moved it to my desk. I was disappointed by my current Post-It note color of pale green because I know my to-do list will stick around for a week and I don’t want to look at that color for so long. Worried about downloading mp3 promos because my computer is on its last legs. But I am curious to hear this Bodycode record. How fattening are these in-house brand Duane Reade oatmeal cookies? Not that I am worried about getting fat. Is it funny that Duane Reade’s initials are DR? Could it be funny to be like “Yo I am going to the DR” and mean Duane Reade and not the Dominican Republic? My friend is going to the Dominican Republic on vacation. I cannot afford to go. Etc.)
Fuck it, I just ate some more of those cookies. My grampa is in the hospital. He’s like 94 now I think? Has your grampa ever gone to the hospital? It’s weird. I guess he slid off the couch onto the floor and it was night so he just crashed out there until the morning when my grandma found him. She asked him why he was on the floor. They kept him overnight at the hospital, he should be released very soon. My dad said he was annoyed about the price of something, so I know he is doing somewhat normal. He’s kind of hip-hop. I mean he is Flatbush born and bred.
So I always thought Timbaland produced this Rich Boy song. Then my coworker Sam tells me it wasn’t him but this kid Ryan. But he’s actually saying Brian. Brian, he says, three times before I catch the B. Ryan or Brian? Brian Brian Brian. Sam went to Cam’ron last night. He had fun.
