Freeload: Renaissance Man, “What Is Guru” MP3

June 16, 2009

Renaissance Man, the Finnish duo of Downtown and Jaxxon, have a new EP, from which "What Is Guru" is taken. There's a peculiar strain of dance music that doesn't seem danceable at all, at least in a club, that we particularly enjoy. All of the rhythm is made up from chopped vocal oohing, more an experiment than a reliable tool. Weird DJ hero Omar S said in an interview, "You got people like, Is that all the record do? Yeah bitch, that’s all the record do. Yep, your lazy ass needs to do some other shit with it." And here Renaissance Man does both for the lazy DJ/listener, let's it spin regular and without change until a halfway Hare Krishna break and then an ease back into regularity. So, is that all the record do? Kind of. The single's other side, "Aloha" is more of a complete production, including the most bugged out sound that shows up four minutes deep that is like a Xerox machine breaking at steady intervals. Not convinced Renaissance Man isn't a noise group.
