Vybz Kartel, “Gaza Commandments” MP3
The vaguely “Arabic” feel of the Gaza Mi Seh Riddim inspired the dirtiest singjay in the West Indies to put down the pen about his cocky and—oh wait! Nevermind. One of the apparent drawbacks of living pon di Gaza (Vybz’s neighborhood, not the fraught Strip in the Middle East) is that one of its commandments is no sexual activity, at all. Which begs the question, where is Vybz composing the majority of his songs? Regardless, that’s not the point—it’s a protest song against the crackdowns on dancehall culture in Jamaica, and it’s one of the finest Vybz tracks since perennial fave “Ramping Shop.”

“One of the apparent drawbacks of living pon di Gaza (Vybz’s neighborhood, not the fraught Strip in the Middle East) is that one of its commandments is no sexual activity, at all. ”
What the hell are you on about? He says “no batty cyaan fuck pon di Gaza” (in other words no gays) and “no pussy cyaan suck pon di Gaza” (in other words no pussy sucking). Come on Fader i thought you were in touch with the streets? Hire a translator or something.

he said “Nuh Batty Can Fuck Pon Di Gaza” meaning “no ass fucking” like ‘tuggy tuggy’ said consult a real jamaican before writing foolishness

Fader, Leave dancehall out of your mouth and keep reporting about battybwoys like major lazor this way you wont have to deal with any translation fucks up!
This is sad, cant you just stick to techno. Leave this shit alone

Indu? Thanks for the comment. For a complete overview of FADER’s coverage of dancehall over the last ten years, start with our back issues and then move on to our weekly dancehall column. When you’re done with that, check our new dance music column—there might be some techno in there occasionally.

Peter if you guys know so much then why are u making 1st grade mistakes?
In Japan they love it so much they have patois schools, maybe fader should send you and julianne for some further “reporting”
-I only found this link from someone making fun of the thread on Dancehall Reggae, jokes on you!
And after putting in all this “work” over “the years”… who are you ? you sound stupid.
But keep pushing those double covers, cool for the kids!
Just take and take from jamaica but never give back!
ps. come pon tha Gaza and ask who INDU is. Fassy.

Indu, I already know who you are, hence the links in my comment. I bolded them so they are easier to find. If that’s not you or if you want to continue the discussion, feel free to PM me, and I will explain exactly what it is that FADER gives back to Jamaica every time we cover one of its artists. And then maybe you can explain to me what exactly FADER is taking from Jamaica, other than photographs and interviews, because I can’t see any reason to bore our readers with this. In the meantime, we will continue to write about Vybz, Portmore, Gaza and Jamaica as best we can because we want other people to know more about them, even people who listen to the techno made by guys like Major Lazer.

Hey, I was the one who made the DHR thread poking fun at the piece. Julianne’s ‘mistranslation’ was clearly just a sly way to draw attention to the track and it worked beautifully. I just snickered to myself and played along.
Indu I’m not sure why the animosity towards Major Lazer/Mad Decent, given that they’ve voiced several Empire-affiliated artists including Jah Vinchi, Blak Ryno and di Teacha himself… and IMO Fader’s dancehall coverage is often more on point than urban music mags like Vibe (who have NO excuse to make the kind of unintentional silly mistakes they tend to). I’m not sure how Fader’s strong promotion of dancehall and dancehall-inspired international genres like dubstep (not techno) is taking anything away from Jamaica.
Big up yuself still Indu. Respeck Peter… mi a wait pon dat eventual Kartel cover. Gaza mi seh.

Fader, stop tek di coke, whole ting look like coke business.

No need to disrespect Fader cause usually they are on point most of the time, however, why has the erroneous article not been edited? This is a horrific mistake that does call Fader’s credibility into question.
