Famed poet, punk rocker and all around fascinating human being Jim Carroll died Friday at his Manhattan home. The immediately notable tribute to Carroll's legacy is that it seems difficult to narrow down his body of work to one summarizing accomplishment. In name, his most notable piece of work was the journal he kept as a drug-infused prep basketball star in upper Manhattan, a tome eventually published as The Basketball Diaries. However, Carroll was also regarded by many as the greatest poet of his generation and formed a highly regarded punk band simply known as the Jim Carroll Band. Carroll was 60-years old.
