You know how in movies there's always that new band playing like their third live show ever and then some well-dressed but still semi-hip looking man comes out of the woodwork after their mindblowing set and buys them a beer and by the next scene they are magically signed to some big label? Do you ever pretend to be that guy in your head for just a little while when you go to concerts? No? You think that's totally weird and creepy? Oh, yeah, we don't think that either. We just go and listen and drink overpriced beer. But if we were to have been that guy at CMJ this year, our inner aging hipster label dude would apparently be weirdly similar to the label dudes Frenchkiss Records bka Syd of Les Savy Fav. Within the last week they've announced deals with two of our favorite unsigned acts from the festivities: L.A.'s Local Natives and Queens-based Freelance Whales.
They announced the Local Natives signing and their forthcoming debut, Gorilla Manor, last week. And today comes the news that Freelance Whales have signed to Frenchkiss/Mom & Pop Records. One of these bands (the Natives one) sounds like they're trying to make music big enough to take down an abandoned building whereas the other one (the one with the Whales) sounds like they just stumbled upon said building and tried to use anything they could find within it to make a bunch of eclectic indie-pop songs. But we still think they'd totally be friends if they met at the holiday party.
Freelance Whales are also wrapping up a U.S. tour with Fanfarlo. Here are the remaining dates.
