By now enough of the facades of the music industry have crumbled to reveal the fact that for every Lady Gaga out there selling out Madison Square Garden, there are dozens and dozens of other bands basically touring for the love of the game. It's one thing to drive around the highways of America in a smelly van. But paying your own way to Mali, that's another story.
That's exactly the prospect Animal Collective's Deakin (real name Joshua Dibb) was looking at until he teamed up with Kickstarter, an online, fund raising platform for artists. Deakin was invited to play the 2010 Festival In The Desert in Essakane, Mali. The festival provides food and board once he arrives but cannot help with international travel. So Deakin started a project on Kickstarter where you can now donate to fund his trip and in return, based on the size of your donation, you can receive goodies such as a signed photograph from the trip, a CD or a hand-signed travel book. You can donate as little as one dollar. This may not get you sweet AC memorabilia, but it gets you the satisfaction that some Malian music lovers will be experiencing something even better: AC tunes.
