For a very limited time, the cult documentary Watch Me Jumpstart—about the even more cult band, Guided by Voices—is streaming for free on the internets. We remember seeing this movie back in high school and thinking, Man, we’d like to hang around with a no-name band in middle America and document their awesomeness before they break up and become legends. Some of us even pursued those dreams. The film is a DIY, lo-fi production by Banks Tarver–whose brother, Clay Tarver, former member of ’90s alt-rock band Chavez, lent a hand with the filming. And what transpired was a gritty celluloid portrayal of Robert Pollard and the Ohio-natives Guided by Voices on the edge of something big. We’ve been wondering a lot lately if the ’90s were really as cool as we remember them being, and after revisiting this film, the answer is clear. Watch it in its entirety on Pitchfork TV.
