The Capsule Tradeshow NYC: A Pick of the Best

January 20, 2010

The Capsule Tradeshow in New York was spread over two locations this time around, having outgrown its cozy home on Norfolk Street. This made for twice the fashion and twice the fun, although it did make it doubly hard to whittle down our favorite picks for the season. Check out the video round-up of the show here, featuring interviews with the likes of accessory impressario Ally Capellino and Shades of Grey designer Micah Cohen.

Ally Capellino Backpacks
It was the first time Capellino showed her collection of amazing bags at Capsule New York, and it's definitely worth taking a peep at our video interview with the London-based design veteran. We grew up carrying Capellino's wares, and definitely weren't the only ones at the show in total awe of her— even the designers over at Copenhagen-based brand Norse Projects were waiting in line to say hello. The new backpacks are nothing short of flawless, from the awesome tan/citrus color combo to the signature skinny leather trimmings.

YMC
There are lots and lots of good things to look forward to in YMC's fall 2010 collection, including some great gingham bib-front button-downs. The shoes seem to take inspiration from vintage mountaineering boots, only they're alot sleeker.

Peter Jensen
Peter Jensen is a true fashion original, and has been successfully creating his singular brand of quirkiness for over 10 years. If you've seen the current spring 2010 lookbook, then you'll recognize the model in the photos (yes it's Peter!) and similarly Jensen was at hand at his booth to answer all our questions. He always manages to inject a few cheeky giggles into his clothes without any outlandish trimmings, and this puppy face sweater and candy striped shoes have just the right amount of fun about them.

Creep by Hiroshi Awai
We interviewed Creep designer Hiroshi Awai for our fall fashion issue last year, but this was our first time meeting the designer in person. Awai was inspired by spaghetti westerns last fall, and there are still a few wild west flourishes knocking about in the new collection. The overall tone though, is more Highland Fling than anything else, and our favorite pieces were made from weighty tweeds and rich velvet.
