You remember two summers ago when Lil' Wayne's "A Milli" was so ubiquitous that your mailman was passing you copies of his version with a MySpace link? Even Chris Brown did a remix, back when that sort of thing was still cute or something. Well, in it's own weird way Phoenix's "1901" has basically become the "A Milli" of French indie-pop, sans Dennis Rodman shoutouts. At times this can feel a bit much, but the original is an all-time jam and if they're all as good as this newly released version by Memory Tapes, we say keep em' coming. Their version takes Phoenix's melodic build and flips it into a near-sci fi soundtrack, giving singer Thomas Mars' vocals a much more ominous feel. Having said that, Phoenix is great because they're infectious and fun, and you can only be so ominous with tambourine. Well played, Memory Tapes. Well played.
