Re-Issue: Minnie Riperton

Sometimes people need style icons to save their lives, and we like to imagine Minnie Riperton was just such a girl. The 1960s were tough on everyone, right? But we see the very 1970s-Minnie gliding onto Soul Train's stage with her long dress and soft round Afro, one perfect gardenia pinned behind her ear, and everybody's problems flying out the window as soon as she hit that first whistle register note. Who could stay mad? She's the perfect antidote to our worried minds, all barefoot and beautiful, a big bouquet of flowers following her everywhere she strode. It sucks being a guy and not feeling appropriate wearing full length florals with lace embrodiery and gardenias in our hair; it's hard being an Earth Goddess in a man's body. But we promise, are we to ever feel comfortable pursuing our more feminine side, Minnie Ripperton will be the look we long for. And that makes her an icon. More pics after the jump. -Alex Frank
