Each week, FADER Media Style Director Chioma Nnadi will comment on the throwback style and fashion of a Suite903 artist. Today's Re-Issue: Miriam Makeba.

The first time I saw this video I figured Miriam Makeba was wearing a leopard-print dress. Guess again!! This lady is wearing a FULL LEOPARD SKIN AS A GOWN!! Back in the '60s, she was probably the first slice of true African glamour that the States had ever seen, rocking a chic cropped 'fro and a string of gorgeous hats that could make Queen Latifah weep. Exiled from her native South Africa, Makeba was the public face of the anti-apartheid movement, and she carried the role with the same grace and style as her wardrobe. What's super impressive is the effortlessly way she put flavorful spins on American fashion—that leopard-skin dress for example, is straight Swaziland meets Lady Sings the Blues. -Chioma Nnadi
